Collect ThinkSystem DM BMC Logs After a Node Failure

For an unexplained ThinkSystem DM node shutdown or restart, Lenovo Support may request BMC logs. This is initial diagnostic collection; more data may be needed. A powered and reachable BMC can remain accessible over SSH even when the node operating system is down.

Record the session

Enable session logging before collecting output. The original PuTTY example selects All session output and a local log file:

PuTTY All session output logging

Find and connect to the BMC

Connect over SSH to the affected node’s BMC management address:

PuTTY SSH connection example

If the address is unknown, connect to the ONTAP cluster management IP and run:

system service-processor show

BMC addresses from system service-processor show

Collect the requested diagnostic output

At the BMC prompt, run the following commands as directed by Lenovo Support and retain their output in the session log:

CommandPurpose
priv set diagEnter diagnostic user mode
events allPrint all system events
system logPrint system console logs
bmc status -dPrint BMC debug information
bmc diagRun BMC diagnostics
