Dell PowerConnect Switch Log Collection

Collect Dell PowerConnect Ethernet switch logs (including 5524, 6224, 6248, 7048 and 8024 models) through the CLI with session logging enabled. The source procedure below uses Windows Telnet with -f; an SSH client with session logging can also capture the output.

Collection Steps

  1. Ensure the switch has a configured management IP address and the laptop can ping it; on Windows 7 and later, you must first install the Telnet Client in "Turn Windows features on or off".
  2. Open Command Prompt, specify the output file, and connect to the switch:

    C:\> telnet -f D:\SwitchLog.txt 192.168.1.1
    telnet -f record session output
  3. Log in and enter privileged EXEC mode (console#); run enable if the prompt is console>. Run show tech-support. If the output is paged, press Space until the command completes and the prompt returns.

    Execute show tech-support
  4. If additional information is needed separately, you can also execute:

    console# show system
    console# show running-config
    console# show vlan
    console# show ip interface
    console# show spanning-tree
    console# show interfaces status
    console# show logging
    console# show stack-port
  5. Enter exit to close the session, then retrieve D:\SwitchLog.txt.

To avoid paging, you can first execute terminal length 0 (supported by some firmware versions). The running-config contains encrypted passwords for accounts; you may delete these lines as needed before sending.
