Backup Exec Log Collection with VxGather

This is the source’s legacy Symantec / Veritas Backup Exec VxGather procedure, illustrated with Backup Exec 12.5 and 2010-era screens. Use the Symantec Gather Utility included with a compatible installed release. Later versions may use different diagnostic tools and paths.

Installation failure issues

Directly retrieve files from the installation log directory:

  • Windows Server 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Backup Exec\Logs
  • For Windows Server 2008 and later: C:\ProgramData\Symantec\Backup Exec\Logs

Issues occurring after installation: Run VxGather

  1. Run VxGather.exe from the Backup Exec installation directory, shown in the source as C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec. In Data to gather, retain the selected base/default logs and add any agent-specific logs requested by support. Specify Output root directory and Case number, then click Gather. Use the support case number when available, or a local collection identifier if no case exists.

  3. A folder named after the service request number will be generated in the output directory; the .cab file inside constitutes the log package.
