NetApp FAS (7-Mode) Inspection Commands and Manual AutoSupport Collection

Applicable to NetApp FAS storage running Data ONTAP 7-Mode (as well as OEM models such as IBM N Series). For AutoSupport collection methods in Clustered Mode (Clustered ONTAP / ONTAP 9), see "ONTAP C-Mode AutoSupport log".

Method 1: Command Output

  1. Log in via Telnet/SSH to any controller (collect from both controllers if dual-controller), and enable session recording in the terminal software.
  2. Execute the following commands and save the output:

    sysconfig -a # Hardware configuration
    sysconfig -v
sysconfig -r # RAID groups and disks
    sysconfig -M
    vol status -r
storage show disk -p # Disk paths
storage show fault # Storage faults (no output can be ignored)
    disk show -v
environment status # Power supplies, fans and temperature
cf status # Controller takeover status
    vif status # Network aggregation
    ifconfig -a
    fcp show adapter
    df
    rdfile /etc/messages # System logs
    rdfile /etc/messages.0

To run 7-Mode commands in a clustered ONTAP nodeshell, enter it with system node run -node local, or use a prefix such as run -node * sysconfig -v. Clustered ONTAP also provides event log show -severity critical and event log show -severity error.

Method 2: Manually Trigger and Retrieve AutoSupport

You can manually trigger and retrieve AutoSupport files when direct submission is unavailable. The enable commands below affect AutoSupport configuration; messages may also be sent to the configured recipients if those destinations are reachable.

  1. Check if AutoSupport is enabled; if disabled, temporarily enable it:

    options autosupport.enable
    options autosupport.support.enable
    options autosupport.enable on
    options autosupport.support.enable on
  2. Manually trigger an AutoSupport generation (the text below will serve as the email subject line and can be filled arbitrarily):

    options autosupport.doit Check
  3. Retrieve the generated file using one of the following three methods. Filenames are named by date and time, e.g., 200709241103.0, and select the most recent one:

    • CIFS: On Windows, map the storage C$ (net use z: \\<StorageIP>\c$), navigate to z:\etc\log\autosupport copy the file, then net use z: /d disconnect.
    • NFS: mount <StorageIP>:/vol/vol0 /mnt, navigate to /mnt/etc/log/autosupport copy the file, then umount /mnt.
    • Terminal: After enabling session recording, execute the following command to output the file content to the screen:
      priv set advanced
      ls /etc/log/autosupport
      rdfile /etc/log/autosupport/200709241103.0
      priv set
  4. If AutoSupport was originally disabled, restore its original state:

    options autosupport.enable off
    options autosupport.support.enable off
