IBM DS8000: Collect and Export a PE Package

Collect a General PE Package from the IBM DS8000 storage HMC. The source describes DS8100/DS8300-era systems with microcode 64.xx or later and estimates about 15 minutes. Use the matching HMC interface for the actual system; a General PE Package does not include every possible diagnostic artifact, such as state saves.

Generate PE Package

  1. Log in to the HMC, select Storage Facility Management, select the corresponding Storage Facility, and choose "Data Collection Tasks" under the SF Image #1 menu.

  2. Open Perform Data Collection On Demand.... In the collection-type dialog, select General PE Package and click Continue....

  3. Select New General PE Package, then click Continue....

    Select General PE Package
  4. Leave Auto Offload unchecked and click OK to start collection. Wait until collection completes.

  5. When the sub-package list appears, select all required files, using Ctrl+A where supported, or the dialog’s multi-selection controls. The pictured dialog specifies holding Shift for multiple selections. The source then selects Offload.

    Offload after selecting all sub-packages

This dialog describes Offload as a Call Home action; it can transmit the selection to IBM when configured. It is separate from the Offload to Media operation below. Follow the collection/offload procedure for the installed release and the support case.

  6. Upon completion of Offload, a prompt indicates that a Serviceable Event with SRC BEB00010 has been generated. Click OK; when the sub-package window appears again, click Cancel.

Export to USB drive

  1. Open Service Focal Point, view Serviceable Events with an Open status, and locate the event with SRC BEB00010 (the event generated by the PE Package).

  2. Select the event and choose "Manage Problem Data".

    Select Manage Problem Data
  3. The window lists all previously generated Package files. Press Ctrl+A Select All, then choose "Offload to Media".

  4. Insert a USB memory stick into the HMC and wait for it to be recognized. The source describes about ten seconds and three audible beeps on its HMC; recognition behavior varies. Select Copy to USB memory stick and confirm to save the PE Package. Verify that the files were copied successfully.

Select Copy to USB memory stick

The example below has Offload to DVD-RAM media selected. Change the radio option to Copy to USB memory stick when exporting to USB.

Alternatively, you can select "Offload to DVD-RAM media" to burn the data onto a DVD-RAM disc in the HMC optical drive.

The source screenshots use different storage-facility identifiers and dates. Select the event and files for the actual system and newly collected package, rather than matching the example problem number or timestamp.
