ThinkSystem CATERR: Fatal / Uncorrectable Bus-Error Case

Symptom and source event IDs

The source describes unexpected reboot/hang during boot or OS operation, often under light workload. XCC means XClarity Controller; FFDC means First Failure Data Capture.

The list preserves the source’s machine-type detail, including paired type references in some entries. It is not a claim that every CATERR on these systems has the same cause. The source excludes SR250, ST250 and ST50 from this particular platform issue.

Firmware mitigation

The source identifies UEFI updates released in Q1 2022 or later with change-log entries marked 2021.2 Intel Platform Update (IPU). Use the exact model’s supported update and change log. The stored article refers to an update-package list that is not included; do not infer a specific package from the date alone.

Recover and apply the applicable workaround

For a hung system, the source describes a four-second power-button hold or AC cycle/virtual reseat. These force recovery and interrupt work; they are not a diagnosis or a routine response to every logged CATERR.

Option1: UEFI processor settings

Enter UEFI Setup, choose System Settings > Operating Modes > Custom Mode, then configure the appropriate Processor settings:

Processors.C1EnhancedMode=Disable
Processors.CStates=Disable
Processors.MONITORMWAIT=Disable

VMware EVC exception: if Enhanced vMotion Compatibility is in use, do not disable MONITOR/MWAIT according to this advisory. Save and reboot for changes to take effect. See also Lenovo’s Linux/UEFI C-state note.

Option2: PackageCstate check

The source says this step can be skipped if C1EnhancedMode and CStates are already disabled. It notes a rarely enabled PackageCstate with no F1 menu and says firmware released from 2017-08-28 defaults it to disabled. Confirm actual settings rather than relying on date alone.

The source omitted OneCLI’s show/set subcommands. The matching English advisory provides:

OneCli.exe config show Processors.PackageCstate --bmc <XCC_USER>:<XCC_PASSWORD>@<XCC_IP> --override

If the result is Processors.PackageCstate=Disable, no change is needed for that setting. If it is Enable, the advisory’s command is:

OneCli.exe config set Processors.PackageCstate "Disable" --bmc <XCC_USER>:<XCC_PASSWORD>@<XCC_IP> --override

Replace placeholders through the approved credential-handling method; no real password is provided. Reboot is required for the applicable OneCLI setting change to take effect.

If the symptom persists

Collect XCC FFDC and the relevant OS support data and escalate to Lenovo Level2/3 through the support case. The source says subject-matter experts should analyze logs before parts are replaced for this issue.

Matching Lenovo English advisory HT504964. The historical OS-collection links may redirect or require an account; choose the collector appropriate to the installed OS/version.
