ONTAP: Limits on Automatic Giveback After Repeated Panics

Scope

The source covers ONTAP 9 FAS/AFF systems using auto-giveback and auto-giveback-after-panic.

How repeated cycles are limited

The default described by the source is two automatic-giveback attempts within 60 minutes, with the period beginning at takeover. Giveback is attempted only when the partner reaches waiting-for-giveback. These controls limit repeated takeover/giveback cycles; they do not repair the cause of a panic or guarantee that a node can never enter a boot loop.

Inspect the settings

Cluster::> set advanced
Cluster::*> storage failover show -node <node_name> -fields attempts,attempts-time

node      attempts attempts-time
--------- -------- -------------
Node-01   2        60

The source’s attemptstime field spelling is corrected to the documented attempts-time. attempts is the attempt limit; attempts-time is the time window in minutes. Inspect values for the installed release rather than assuming every cluster retains defaults.
