NetApp ONTAP Licenses: Feature Glossary and Suite Boundaries

NetApp licensing has changed from historical Base/Premium/Flash bundles through Core, Data Protection, Security and Compliance, Hybrid Cloud and Encryption bundles to newer suites. Entitlements depend on the actual platform, ONTAP release and purchase/upgrade agreement. Do not determine a system’s license from a feature name alone.

Licensing scope

ONTAP One combines broad on-premises feature entitlements, but does not make every NetApp cloud-delivered service free. ONTAP Base is a narrower alternative; the source’s “free basic edition” description is not an entitlement or pricing guarantee. Check the installed license file and the vendor’s suite terms rather than assuming four protocols define the entire package.

The current ONTAP licensing overview lists SnapMirror cloud and SnapMirror S3 in ONTAP One. The separate NLF download page says those licenses are delivered through an ONTAP One Compatibility bundle, available without extra charge to eligible ONTAP One holders on separate request. Suite inclusion and delivery/installation of an individual license file are different questions. Confirm the actual system’s eligibility and obtain the required NLF through NetApp; do not assume the keys are already installed.

1. Data protection

  • SnapMirror: asynchronous replication and supported synchronous configurations for disaster recovery; mirror/vault policies and retained snapshots serve different recovery goals. Verify source and destination licensing and compatibility. SnapVault is historical terminology associated with the unified protection workflow, not a guarantee that every old system has the same entitlement.
  • SnapMirror cloud: snapshot-based backup to supported object targets through a supported backup application or management service. The source names AWS S3, Azure Blob and Google Cloud Storage as examples. Confirm the exact integration, source entitlement, target and service charges; a NetApp-branded target does not automatically waive every cost or prerequisite.
  • SnapMirror S3: protection of ONTAP S3 buckets to supported targets. The source distinguishes NetApp/StorageGRID from other targets. Verify the current target-specific entitlement; do not infer it from a FabricPool license or an old compatibility-bundle name.
  • MetroCluster: synchronous cross-site protection for supported architectures, designed for zero-RPO recovery within its supported failure conditions. Hardware, topology and operational requirements still apply.
  • Data Protection Optimized (DPO): the source discusses secondary-storage/backup targets and Lenovo DM5000F/DM7000F Premium-bundle examples. Those OEM/platform-specific claims were not independently verified as universal ONTAP One rights. Confirm the OEM entitlement; do not assume every cluster gets this mode.

2. Data management and efficiency

  • SnapCenter: application-consistent backup management and integration with supported protection workflows.
  • FlexClone: writable snapshot-based clones initially share data blocks; changed data and retained dependencies can consume additional space. “Zero space” is not a permanent capacity guarantee.
  • FlexCache: remote data caching for supported distributed access scenarios.
  • FabricPool: cold-data tiering to a supported object store. Tiering rights/capacity and cloud charges require their own checks; ONTAP One does not make every external object-store service free.
  • Storage efficiency: deduplication, compression and thin provisioning reduce physical consumption where supported; savings depend on workload and configuration.

The FabricPool licensing instructions distinguish licensed external-object capacity from StorageGRID/ONTAP S3 exceptions and Cloud Volumes ONTAP. Check that target-specific rule rather than the source’s generalized “included in One” claim.

3. Security and compliance

  • NVE / NAE: NetApp Volume Encryption and Aggregate Encryption protect data at rest at different scopes. Aggregate encryption alone does not establish separate per-tenant encryption keys or complete tenant isolation.
  • SnapLock: WORM retention for supported compliance/enterprise use cases. A product feature alone does not certify an organization’s SEC/HIPAA compliance.
  • Autonomous Ransomware Protection (ARP): detection and protective recovery mechanisms, including snapshots where supported. It is not a guarantee that every ransomware attack is prevented or every workload can be recovered.

4. Modern workloads and performance

The source covers NVMe/FC and NVMe/TCP for supported low-latency workloads, FlexGroup for scale-out file data, and NetApp Trident for Kubernetes integration. Check platform, protocol, release and application support; a suite entitlement does not make every hardware configuration capable of every feature.

5. Cloud and hybrid-cloud integration

Cloud Volumes ONTAP runs ONTAP software in supported public-cloud configurations. It has its own licensing and charging model; an on-premises ONTAP One purchase is not a free cloud deployment. BlueXP is the management-platform name used by the source; integration for backup/tiering/orchestration does not include all subscriptions or cloud infrastructure. The same distinction applies to SnapMirror cloud integrations and Cloud Insights monitoring/security services. Verify each service’s current offering and entitlement separately.

6. Management and Base-versus-One comparison

The source also describes System Manager, the ONTAP REST API and cluster management/HA. These describe management capabilities, not an exhaustive licensed-feature list. Base serves narrower requirements; One provides a wider suite, but supported hardware, country restrictions, software versions, external services and purchased entitlements still matter. Avoid treating the source’s “everything included” slogan as a licensing contract.
