ONTAP Root-Volume Recovery Messages After Unexpected Power Loss

Scope and symptom

The source concerns ONTAP 9 after an unexpected power loss or environmental shutdown, such as excessive data-center temperature. On restart, it reports the following root-volume and replicated-database messages:

The contents of the root volume may have changed and the local management configuration may be inconsistent and/or the local management databases may be out of sync with the replicated databases. This node is not fully operational.
Contact support personnel for the root volume recovery procedures.
[cluster:callhome.root.vol.recovery.reqd:EMERGENCY]: Call home for ROOT VOLUME NOT WORKING PROPERLY: RECOVERY REQUIRED.
Internal error: Cannot open corrupt replicated database. Automatic recovery attempt has failed or is disabled. Check the event logs for details. This node is not fully operational. Contact support personnel for the root volume recovery procedures.

Version-specific recovery

ONTAP 9.4 and later: the stored source directs readers to the corresponding recovery section in the vendor KB. Its old URL has moved; use the current English root-volume / Data Replication Module recovery KB. The public page identifies the symptoms, but the full recovery procedure requires support sign-in. Obtain the matching procedure or assistance from support.

ONTAP 9.3 and earlier: the following is the legacy sequence recorded by the source, to be used only after the recovery condition and applicable procedure have been confirmed with support. Do not apply it as a generic repair for every root-volume or database error.

  1. The source halts the affected node to reach LOADER:
    ::*>halt -node <node>
  2. Inspect the two boot arguments:
    LOADER>printenv bootarg.init.boot_recovery
    LOADER>printenv bootarg.rdb_corrupt
  3. Where the source’s recovery procedure calls for clearing set recovery/corruption flags, it records:
    LOADER>unsetenv bootarg.init.boot_recovery
    LOADER>unsetenv bootarg.rdb_corrupt
    LOADER>saveenv
    LOADER>bye

Clearing a boot flag is not proof that damaged data or a corrupt database has been repaired. The source’s version split and the console’s instruction to contact support remain essential.
