StorCLI Reference for Legacy MegaRAID: Virtual Drives, Rebuilds, Cache and Foreign Configuration
The source covers several generations including 3008iMR, 9361, 9364, 9460 and 9560 and uses historical StorCLI versions. Match the utility, firmware and feature set to the actual controller; shared syntax does not prove every option is supported on every model. These are independent reference examples, not an ordered recovery script. Verify controller/enclosure/slot/VD/DG/Array/Row identities and the data state before a mutating action. Force, noprompt, cache-discard, foreign deletion and drive-state changes can remove confirmations or data protection.
I. Download and Installation of Tools
Log in tothe BROADCOM website RAID controller card page.
Click the link below: https://www.broadcom.com/products/storage/raid-controllers/megaraid-9560-8i
On the "DOWNLOADS" tab, click "Management Software and Tools".
Open the Management Software and Tools list.
Obtain the StorCLI version supported by the target controller, firmware and operating system; do not assume one newest package supports every legacy model.
After extraction, you will obtain toolkits for different operating systems.
The installation method for the StorCLI tool varies across different operating systems. Here, we provide examples for Windows, Linux, and VMware; please refer to the "Readme" file in the toolkit for installation methods on other operating systems.
For RAID cards such as 3008IMR, 9361, 9460, and 9560, the adapted StorCLI tool is "storcli64".
Installing the StorCLI tool on a Windows system.
Upload the Windows-compatible toolkit to any directory on the server operating system (e.g., C:\tmp).
Enter cmd in the Windows Run dialog box and press Enter to open the command-line tool.
In the command line, enter cd followed by the directory containing the toolkit, e.g., cd C:\tmp.
The StorCLI tool on Windows does not require installation; at this point, you can execute RAID controller commands.
Installing the StorCLI tool on a Linux system.
Use a file transfer tool (e.g., Putty) to upload the Linux-compatible toolkit to any directory on the server operating system, using /tmp as an example.
Execute the rpm -ivh /tmp/StorCLIxxx.rpm command in the Linux command line to install the StorCLI tool.
![]()
The installation path for StorCLI is /opt/MegaRAID/storcli/. You must navigate to this directory before executing RAID controller commands.
After installation, you can execute RAID controller commands.
Installing the StorCLI tool on a VMware system.
Use a file transfer tool (e.g., Putty) to upload the VMware-compatible toolkit to any directory on the server operating system, using /tmp as an example.
The source’s legacy VMware branch installs the actual vmware-xxx-storcli.vib package with esxcli software vib install -v=/tmp/vmware-xxx-storcli.vib. It appends a no-sig-check bypass in the original; that is not a normal signed-package prerequisite. Use the supported ESXi installation procedure.
![]()
The installation path for StorCLI is /opt/lsi/storcli/. You must navigate to this directory before executing RAID controller commands.

| storcli64 /ccontroller_id/vraid_id del | Delete RAID Group |
![]()
* indicates the default value.
Parameter Description
| Parameter | Parameter Description | Value |
| controller_id | ID of the RAID controller | – |
| enclosure_id | ID of the Enclosure containing the hard drive | – |
| rlevel | RAID level to be configured | level can be 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, or 60; these numbers represent the corresponding RAID levels. |
| size | Capacity of the RAID group to be configured | The source’s all value requests the available usable VD capacity. That capacity depends on RAID geometry, parity/mirroring, reserved space and the selected drives; it is not generally the sum of raw member capacities. |
| name | Name of the RAID group to be configured | – |
| drives | Hard drives to be added to the RAID group | – |
| startid–endid | Start and end IDs of the hard drives | – |
| slot_id | Hard drive ID | – |
| pdperarray | Number of drives in the sub-group. When creating RAID10, RAID50, or RAID60 groups, this parameter must be set. It is not required when creating other RAID levels. | – |
| pdcache | Set the Cache status of RAID member drives | on off default |
| pi | Enable supported Protection Information(PI) handling. PI is an integrity feature and is not a backup or a replacement for the chosen RAID level’s redundancy. | – |
| wrcache | Set the Write Cache attribute for the RAID group. The full command is wrcache=wt|wb|awb; here 'wrcache=' can be omitted. | wt: After the disk subsystem receives all transmitted data, the controller returns a data transfer completion signal to the host. wb: After the controller Cache receives all transmitted data, it returns a data transfer completion signal to the host. awb: In the event that the RAID controller has no capacitor or the capacitor is damaged, force the use of 'wb' mode. |
| rdcache | Set the Read Cache attribute for the RAID group. The full command is rdcache=ra|nora; here 'rdcache=' can be omitted. | ra: When reading required data from the virtual disk, subsequent data is read simultaneously into the Cache. When users access this data subsequently, it hits directly in the Cache, reducing disk seek operations, saving response time, and improving data read speed. nora: The RAID controller reads data from the virtual disk only upon receiving a data read command; no pre-fetching operation is performed. |
| iopolicy | Set the I/O policy for the RAID group. The full command is iopolicy=direct|cached; here 'iopolicy=' can be omitted. Description: The source says later firmware may not support Cached I/O and uses Direct I/O as its default example. Confirm the actual firmware’s supported policies; do not treat this as a universal capability statement. | Direct: The definition differs in read and write scenarios: In the read scenario, data is read directly from the hard drive (except when 'Read Policy' is set to 'Read Ahead', in which case read data is processed via the RAID controller Cache). In the write scenario, write data is processed via the RAID controller Cache (except when 'Write Policy' is set to 'Write Through', in which case write data bypasses the RAID controller Cache and is written directly to the hard drive). Cached: All reads and writes are processed via the RAID controller Cache. This parameter value should only be set when configuring CacheCade 1.1; it is not recommended for other scenarios. |
| Strip | Set the stripe size for the RAID group | Source stripe-size examples in KB: MR 64,128,256,512,1024; iMR 64 only in this source. The command synopsis above gives a different option list; verify the actual controller/firmware rather than treating the two lists as one validated range. |
| EmulationType | Source EmulationType setting for the VD’s reported sector characteristics; 512e uses 512-byte logical sectors over 4KiB physical sectors, not 4KiB logical sectors. | 0: Default. The source says 512e is reported when a member uses 512e emulation, otherwise 512n. Verify the actual reported logical/physical sizes. 1: Disable. The source says 512n emulation is reported even when a member is 512e; do not infer that a physical drive’s native sector size has changed. 2: Force. The source describes forcing the reported emulation setting. This does not convert the VD into a 4Kn logical-sector device; check the exact firmware’s behavior. |
| Spares | Specify the hot spare drive for the RAID group | – |
| raid_id | ID of the RAID group to be deleted | – |
![]()
See Query RAID Card/RAID Group/Physical Hard Disk Information for the method to query various IDs involved above.
When multiple hard disks are added to a RAID group, they must be separated by commas. A single slot hard disk is represented as enclosure_id:slot_id, and continuous slot hard disks are represented as: enclosure_id:startid-endid.

VIII. Query and Clear PreservedCache Data
Preserved cache may contain acknowledged data not yet written to a missing/offline virtual drive. Clearing it discards that data; the reference’s delete command is not a health-check step. Likewise, importing and deleting foreign configuration are different recovery actions, and a force-good label does not verify data integrity.
Command Function
Query and clear PreservedCache data.
Command Format
storcli64 /ccontroller_id show preservedcache
storcli64 /ccontroller_id/vvd_id delete preservedcache force
Parameter Description
Parameter | Parameter Description | Value |

X. Set Hard Disk Status
Command Function
Forcefully set the hard disk status.
Command Format
storcli64 /ccontroller_id/eenclosure_id/sslot_id set state
Parameter Description

| controller_id | ID of the RAID card where the hard disk is located | – |
| enclosure_id | ID of the Enclosure where the hard drive is located | – |
| slot_id | Physical hard drive slot number | – |
| state | Hard drive status to be configured | online: Brings the hard drive online. When a member disk in a Degraded RAID group is offline, this parameter can be used to rejoin the offline member disk to the RAID group, changing its state from offline to online. offline: Takes the hard drive offline. Using this parameter will detach the target hard drive from the RAID group, causing a redundant RAID group to degrade (if the number of offline disks exceeds the maximum number of failed disks allowed in the RAID group, the RAID group will also go offline); a non-redundant RAID group will directly enter the Failed state. jbod: Sets the hard drive to JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) mode via this parameter. good: For a hard drive in ubad state, using this parameter sets it to ugood (foreign) state, allowing you to choose to import or clear the foreign configuration. For a hard drive in JBOD state, using this parameter sets it to ugood state. A hard drive in ugood state can be used to create a RAID array or as a hot spare. |
Refer to Querying RAID Controller/RAID Group/Physical Hard Drive Information for methods to query the IDs involved above.
Usage Guide

XIII. Recover Hard Drives in Frn-Bad State (Exercise Caution)
Command Function
Recover a RAID member disk from the Frn-Bad state to the Online state.
Command Format
storcli64 /ccontroller_id/eenclosure_id/sslot_id set good
storcli64 /ccontroller_id/fall import
storcli64 /ccontroller_id/eenclosure_id/sslot_id start rebuild
Parameter Description
Parameter | Parameter Description | Value |
| controller_id | ID of the RAID card where the hard drive is located | – |
| enclosure_id | ID of the Enclosure where the hard drive is located | – |
| slot_id | Physical hard drive slot number of the member disk | – |
For methods to query the various IDs involved above, see Querying RAID Card/RAID Group/Physical Hard Drive Information.
Usage Guide
None
Usage Example
The source photo shows slot 1 and slot 5 as UBad F. Its following force-good/import/rebuild sequence is a conditional recovery example, not a routine fix for an unknown failed array. Verify complete member identity, foreign metadata, failure order and data currency with the supported recovery procedure first; changing a label to UGood does not repair the underlying hardware or validate its contents.
Figure 8-225 Hard Drive Status
1. Set the status of hard drives in slot 1 and slot 5 to UGood first.
domino:~# ./storcli64 /c0/e0/s1,5 set good
Controller = 0
Status = Success
Description = Set Drive Good Succeeded.
2. Import external configuration.
domino:~# ./storcli64 /c0/fall import
Controller = 0
Status = Success
Description = Successfully imported foreign configuration
3. After importing the external configuration, if RAID rebuild is required (using slot 1 as an example), execute the following command.
domino:~# ./storcli64 /c0/e0/s1 start rebuild
Controller = 0
Status = Success
Description = Start Drive Rebuild Succeeded.
XIV. Query Information About Super Capacitors

In the returned output, "Device Name CVPM02" indicates that the super capacitor name is "CVPM02", and "CacheVault Flash Size 8.0GB" indicates that the TFM Flash card cache capacity is "8.0GB".
If the actual CacheVault/supercapacitor state is FAILED, diagnose and replace the supported component through the service procedure. The sample’s CVPM02 and 8.0GB are identifiers/capacity from that example, not universal replacement specifications.
