ARCCONF Reference for Legacy PMC/Adaptec Controllers: Queries, Arrays and State Changes
This reference preserves the source’s Windows/Linux/VMware branches and its controller, Array, LD, maxCache and cache-policy examples. It mixes OEM controller names with output identifying a SmartRAID 3152-8i; not every command/default applies to every 8204/8222/8060 variant. Select the matching ARCCONF package and controller/firmware manual. Controller numbering here starts at 1 in the examples; a physical device is addressed by its channel/device-number pair, which is not automatically the chassis slot label. Mutating examples are not a sequence to run on an existing array.

XI. Set Hard Drive and LD Status
Command Function
Sets the status of hard drives, Logical Drives (LD), and MaxCache.
Command Syntax
Command Syntax | Function |
| arcconf setstate controller_id device physical_id state | Sets the hard drive status. |
| arcconf setstate controller_id logicaldrive LD_id optimal | Sets the LD status to optimal. |
| arcconf setstate controller_id maxcache LD_id optimal | Sets the MaxCache status to optimal. |
Parameter Description
Parameter | Parameter Description | Value |
| controller_id | ID of the RAID controller card where the hard drive is located | – |
| physical_id | Physical channel/device-number pair for the device whose state will change. | – |
| state | Sets the hard drive status. | hsp: Sets the hard drive as a hot spare. For details, see Setting Hot Spares for an LD. rdy: Removes the hot spare status from the hard drive or changes the hard drive status from fail to ready. ddd: Forces the hard drive status to offline (fault). eed: Enables an erased hard drive. |
| array_id | Array ID | – |
| type | Sets the type of hot spare. | 1: Dedicated spare. In the referenced ARCCONF terminology this temporarily takes over after a failure and can be associated with the allowed arrays; check the exact controller’s scope. 2: Autoreplace spare. This replaces a failed member permanently after rebuilding; the source’s parenthetical global-spare label does not establish that it is a shareable global spare. |
| LD_id | Logical Drive (LD) ID | – |
Usage Guide
The source recommends forcing an LD to Optimal before replacement, but that is not a normal disk-replacement prerequisite. Forcing Optimal overrides failure state and may expose stale/inconsistent member data, as the original command output warns. Diagnose and follow the supported recovery/replacement procedure; do not force a degraded/failed LD healthy merely to proceed.
Usage Example
# Set the hard drive to offline.
[root@localhost ~]# arcconf setstate 1 device 0 11 ddd
Controllers found: 1
Changing state from Ready to Failed may delete any data partitions present on the drive.
Are you sure you want to continue?
Press y, then ENTER to continue or press ENTER to abort: y
Command completed successfully.
# Set the LD status to optimal.
[root@localhost ~]# arcconf setstate 1 logicaldrive 0 optimal
Controllers found: 1
Attention: Using advanced options to force a logical device online is a dangerous operation and
requires substantial knowledge of the RAID level and the nature of the logical device failure.
Even if this operation can force the logical device online,
all data on this logical device may be lost if one or more disks contain outdated data.
All available disk segments that constitute this logical device will be forced online;
the data they contain will be used as valid data.
If you are not sure, abort and contact your service representative.
Are you sure you want to continue?
Press y, then ENTER to continue or press ENTER to abort: y
Command completed successfully.
# Set the MaxCache status to optimal.
[root@localhost ~]# arcconf setstate 1 maxcache 1 optimal

| array_id | ID of the array | – |
| state | Set the enablement status of SSD I/O Bypass | enable: Enable SSD I/O Bypass disable: Disable SSD I/O Bypass |
Usage Guide
None
Usage Example
# Disable SSD I/O Bypass.
[root@localhost ~]# arcconf setarrayparam 1 2 ssdiobypass disable
Controllers found: 1
Disabling SSD I/O bypass will impact the performance of all the logical device(s) in the array. You can enable the controller caching on logical device(s) to improve performance.
Command completed successfully.
XIII. Cache Operation Without Backup Power
The source’s no-battery write-cache option removes backup-power protection; retain its original loss-on-power-failure warning. A forced status label or successful command return does not prove that data is consistent or that cache contents are protected.
Command Function
This command allows the use of the controller card cache without capacitors.
When using the controller card cache without capacitors, power loss will result in data loss. Use this command with caution.
Command Format
arcconf setcache controller_id nobatterywritecache enable
Parameter Description
Parameter | Parameter Description | Value |
| controller_id | ID of the RAID controller card where the hard disk is located | – |
Usage Example
# Set to use cache without capacitors.
[root@localhost ~]# arcconf setcache 1 nobatterywritecache enable
