Install SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10: Archived OEM Guide

Archived SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 installation procedure; the source figures identify SLES 10 SP2 and an LSI-MegaSR example. Four original English boot/driver figures are retained; the Chinese YaST bitmap labels are translated English instructional illustrations, not captured official English UI. Actual selected language and other settings remain source values. No installation, formatting or server configuration was performed while preparing this article.

1. Boot from optical disc and load RAID card driver

The archived source describes an ISO driver-update image supplied through a floppy, USB device emulating a floppy, or burned optical disc, and mentions UltraISO as its example tool. Use the actual controller vendor’s driver-update format and instructions for the exact SLES service pack, architecture and kernel; not every USB device or ISO works as a virtual floppy. A separate driver is required only where the supported controller/image needs it.

1) After booting from the optical disc, the following installation interface appears. Move the cursor to 'Installation', press F5, select Yes, then press Enter on 'Installation' to begin the installation.

2) Read the RAID card driver from the floppy drive or optical drive, then press OK to confirm;

The source lists an LSI-MegaSR logical disk as sdb with existing partitions. Identify the actual controller-presented disk and required data rather than assuming sdb always means the installation target. Later screenshots show different proposed and final partition layouts; they are separate source stages, not proof that one set of existing partitions remains unchanged.

3) Begin entering the installation process

2. Basic Settings

4) Select language

5) Read the actual license agreement and accept only if the responsible user agrees. The localized image retains the original selected acceptance control and translates the visible text as an instructional illustration; it is not a substitute for the agreement supplied with the chosen medium. No agreement was accepted while preparing this guide.

6) Select installation method - Fresh Installation

7) Set time zone and time

3. Partition Settings

8) Click the 'Partition' option to configure partitions

9) Select 'Create custom partition settings', then choose 'Custom Partition (Experts Only)'.

Plan the supported boot and application layout for the actual server. The source’s initial proposal creates a reiserfs root on /dev/sdb3 at 869.1 GB and uses /dev/sdb2 for swap; it also lists a separate existing RHEL boot entry. The later Expert Partitioner instead shows a 930.3 GB LSI-MegaSR disk, /dev/sdb1 swap 2.0 GB and /dev/sdb2 reiserfs root 928.3 GB, with an additional 1.4 MB EVMS device. Those are different layouts. A root and swap pair is an example, not a universal boot-layout requirement. Review target identity, formatting and required data before the final installation confirmation.

4. Select Software Packages

10) Click the 'Software' button to select the software packages to install.

Select packages required for the actual workload. The source adds C/C++ Compiler and Tools and increases the displayed package size from 1.8 GB to 2.3 GB. Its software selector keeps GNOME, X Window System, Novell AppArmor, documentation, 32-bit runtime, base system and print server checked, while KDE and several server roles are unchecked. A compiler is useful only where a source-built driver/application requires it; it is not a mandatory prerequisite for every precompiled driver or installation. Choose Accept after reviewing the intended package set.

11) Click the 'Accept' button to confirm installation.

Choose Install only after reviewing the final confirmation: the selected partitions will be formatted and existing data in them deleted according to the installation plan. The supplied format-progress image shows /dev/sdb2 928.3 GB at 0%; the following basic-installation image shows 43%, with file copy completed, saving configuration current and later boot-manager/initial-boot tasks pending. Neither is a completed installation.

Wait for the actual installer to report successful completion and follow its remaining configuration/reboot instructions. The source provides no final successful reboot, account/network setup or running-system screenshot; its last figure is still at 43%. Do not infer completion from the final line of the original prose.

English references and source scope

No corresponding English edition of this OEM QA or complete equivalent English image set was verified. IBM supplies a same-purpose SLES 10 installation procedure for different hardware; its drivers are not substitutes for LSI-MegaSR. SUSE release notes identify the actual service pack, and the NetIQ resource-kit installation material has a separate application-specific scope. These references do not certify the OEM configuration. Language autonyms, including Chinese choices, are retained as interface data in the language-selection illustration.
