IBM / Lenovo System x: Identify FRU, Part Number and Feature Code
A service request for an IBM/Lenovo System x server needs the correct service replacement identifier. Match the exact machine type/model and current component; ordering codes and as-built records serve different purposes.
FRU, PN and FC
- FRU (Field Replacement Unit): the service replacement identifier. Logs/labels often identify a FRU; use the matching service part when opening the case.
- PN (Part Number): a part identifier that can appear alongside a FRU or manufacturing identifier. It is not guaranteed to be interchangeable with the service FRU field.
- FC (Feature Code): an ordering/configuration code, such as 5701 or 280D in the source; it does not replace the required service FRU identifier.
The source lists 45W3867, 45W6591 and 45W9610 as alternatives associated with 45W3869. Treat that as a source example, not a blanket substitution rule for every platform; verify the actual approved replacement/substitution and machine compatibility.
Method 1: model-based service parts
Search the official support site for system service parts <model>, for example system service parts x3650 m4. Open the list for the exact machine type/model and locate the replacement identifier.
The official IBM System x3650 M4 Type 7915 page was located. M4, M4BD and M4HD have separate lists; a similar marketing name alone does not establish parts compatibility.
Method 2: serial-based original configuration
Open Lenovo’s warranty/product lookup and select the intended server by Serial Number. On its product page, use Parts to inspect the available parts/as-built records:

The source’s later screenshot is an x3630 M4 Type 7158 example, not the earlier x3650 M4 search result. Preserve that distinction. Serial-based as-built information describes shipment configuration; later additions/replacements can make installed hardware differ. Confirm the current component and applicable ServerProven/model-specific service support before ordering or replacing it.
