ONTAP: Identify a Failed Drive Before Replacement
This source guide applies to ONTAP 9 and identifies a failed drive whether or not its amber attention LED is lit.
System Manager: ONTAP 9.8 and later
- Open CLUSTER → Disks.
- In the Disks tab, filter Container Type for Broken.
- Read the disk path from Name, in the source’s format
<stack-id>.<shelf>.<bay>.
ONTAP CLI
Follow Remove a failed disk. Its failed-disk query is:
storage disk show -brokenA partially failed drive can still be undergoing Rapid RAID Recovery. Confirm that the applicable recovery/removal conditions are satisfied before removing it. An LED alone is not the drive’s failure status.
Confirm the physical shelf
The stored source suggests using environmental or shelf AutoSupport information to match power-supply serial numbers when a locator LED cannot be used. Its example PSU serials are PMA441920128346 and PMA441920128361. Compare against the physical PSU labels at the back of the shelf with the customer or maintenance provider, then map the confirmed shelf and disk ID to the correct bay.
The source’s wording about led_on access is unclear; the current ONTAP locator command is documented as storage disk set-led. Matching a PSU serial identifies the shelf, not by itself the failed drive. Obtain the actual disk ID/bay mapping and verify that the reported failed drive has not already been replaced.
Without console access, coordinate with a support engineer who can verify shelf AutoSupport data and both PSU serials, then confirm the drive identity before replacement.
Video and references
The official English identification KB includes the vendor’s video demonstration. Its current embedded target is Identify a failed disk (vendor video). This replaces an inaccessible BookStack attachment player; no claim is made about subtitle availability.
