Reset a BMC User Password from Windows or Linux
This translates the source’s local, in-band IPMI procedure. It assumes authorized operating-system access and the correct IPMI driver/interface. Identify the actual account ID before changing a password; the example admin ID1 is not guaranteed on every BMC. Literal example passwords are replaced with placeholders.
Windows example
- If the required IPMI driver is not installed, the source supplies IPMIToolWin.zip and runs its
getlog.batinstaller. This is the source’s legacy package, not a verified current driver for every Windows/server version; obtain and inspect the compatible vendor package. - Open Command Prompt, enter the package’s ipmitool directory and list users on the indicated channel:
ipmitool user list 1Source example output:
ID Name Callin Link Auth IPMI Msg Channel Priv Limit
1 admin false true true ADMINISTRATOR
2 default true false false NO ACCESSSet the password for the verified account:
ipmitool user set password 1 <NEW_PASSWORD>Linux example
The source links ipmitool-1.8.18.tar.gz.zip and illustrates a source build:

The image uses chmod 777 configure; broad world-write permission is unnecessary for making a script executable. Prefer the distribution’s compatible package or a reviewed build process; if building, use appropriate permissions such as chmod +x configure. make install changes system software, so use the intended prefix/privileges.
For the source’s local IPMI device access:
modprobe ipmi_devintf
modprobe ipmi_si
ipmitool user list 1The source shows the same two-user table as above. Confirm the actual admin user ID, then:
ipmitool user set password 1 <NEW_PASSWORD>Replace the placeholder with a password meeting the BMC’s supported length/complexity rules. Command-line password arguments may be exposed in process/history records; follow the platform’s approved credential-handling method. Verify access with the intended account and avoid assuming that local IPMI is available under every firmware lockdown policy.
