IBM i (AS/400) Hard Drive Replacement

There are two ways to replace a hard disk: online and offline.

The following describes online replacement. Offline replacement is performed with the system powered off; identify the correct disk location and do not remove the wrong disk.
    I. Online disk replacement
    1. Enter SST.
    2. Enter Hardware Service Manager.
    3. Enter Device Concurrent Maintenance and specify the disk location.
    4. When the disk LED starts flashing, begin removing the disk. Pull it halfway out, not all the way. The disk must be removed within 9 seconds; otherwise, serious consequences may occur.
    5. Wait 5 seconds, then remove the disk completely.
    6. Prepare the new disk. Enter SST, Hardware Service Manager, and Device Concurrent Maintenance, and specify the disk location. Do not press Enter yet.
    7. Insert the disk halfway, then press Enter on the console.
    8. When the disk LED starts flashing, fully insert the disk within 9 seconds.
    9. After a while, the disk LED remains lit.
    10. Perform rebuild on the console.
    This completes the procedure.
