IBM Server Fault Diagnosis and Troubleshooting (Training)
Server Fault Diagnosis Process

IBM Server Front View

IBM Server Operator Information Panel

- Power Control Button and Power Indicator Light: Pressing this button manually turns the server on or off, or wakes the server from power-saving mode. The status of the power indicator light is as follows:
- Off: AC power is not connected, or there is a fault with the power supply or the indicator light itself.
- Rapidly flashing (four times per second): The server is turned off but not ready to turn on. The power control button is disabled. Approximately three minutes after the server is connected to AC power, the power control button becomes active.
- Slowly flashing (once per second): The server is turned off and is ready to be turned on. You can press the power control button to turn on the server.
- On: The server is turned on.
- Gradually dimming until off: The server is in power-saving mode. To wake the server, press the power control button or use the IMM Web interface.
- Ethernet Icon Indicator Light: This indicator light illuminates the Ethernet icon.
- Ethernet Activity Indicator Light: If any of these indicator lights are on, it indicates that the server is sending signals to an Ethernet LAN connected to the Ethernet port corresponding to that indicator light, or receiving signals from that Ethernet LAN.
- Information Indicator Light: When this indicator light is on, it indicates that a general event has occurred. An indicator light on the Light Path Diagnostic panel will also illuminate to help identify the error.
- System Error Indicator Light: When this indicator light is on, it indicates that a system error has occurred. An indicator light on the Light Path Diagnostic panel will also illuminate to help identify the error.
- Release Latch: Sliding the latch to the left allows operation of the Light Path Diagnostic panel, which is located behind the Operator Information Panel.
- Locator Button and Locator Indicator Light: Use this indicator light to visually locate this server among other servers. It can also be used to verify the physical presence of a Trusted Platform Module (TPM). Pressing this button can locally turn the indicator light on or off. You can use IBM Systems Director to remotely illuminate this indicator light.
IBM Server Light Path Diagnostic Panel

| Indicator Light | Problem | Action |
|---|---|---|
| None, but the System Error Indicator Light is on. | An error has occurred but cannot be diagnosed, or the IMM has failed. The Light Path Diagnostic indicator light does not indicate this error. | Use Setup Utility to view the system event log for information about the error. |
| BRD | An error has occurred on the motherboard. | 1. Check the indicator lights on the motherboard to determine the component causing the error. In the following cases, the BRD indicator light may illuminate: ● Battery ● Missing PCI riser card assembly ● Voltage regulator failure 2. View the system event log for information about the error. 3. Replace all failed user-replaceable components or install missing user-replaceable components, such as batteries or PCI adapter assemblies. 4. If the voltage regulator has failed, replace the system board. |
| CNFG | A hardware configuration error occurred. | |
| CPU | The CPU LED indicates a microprocessor failure only when it is lit alone. When both the CPU and CNFG LEDs are lit, it indicates an invalid microprocessor configuration. | 1. Determine if the CNFG LED is also lit. If the CNFG LED is not lit, it indicates a microprocessor failure. 2. If the CNFG LED is lit, it indicates an invalid microprocessor configuration. |
| DASD | A hard disk drive error occurred. The hard disk drive has failed or is missing. | 1. Check the hard disk drive LEDs to identify the drive with the status LED lit, then reinstall that hard disk drive. 2. Reinstall the hard disk drive backplane. 3. If the error persists, replace the following components in the order shown: a. Replace the hard disk drive. b. Replace the hard disk drive backplane |
| FAN | A fan has failed, is running too slowly, or has been removed. The TEMP LED may also be lit. | 1. Reinstall the failed fan indicated by the LED lit near the fan connector on the system board. 2. Replace the failed fan indicated by the LED lit near the fan connector on the system board. |
| LOG | An error message has been written to the System Event Log. | View the IMM System Event Log and System Error Log for information about the error. Replace all components identified in the error log. |
| MEM | The MEM LED indicates a memory error only when it is lit alone. When both the MEM and CNFG LEDs are lit, it indicates an invalid memory configuration. | 1. Determine if the CNFG LED is also lit. If so, run the memory diagnostic program to determine the problem. a. If the test report indicates a memory error, replace the failed DIMM indicated by the LED lit on the system board. b. If the test report indicates an invalid memory configuration, reseat the DIMM in a slot with a supported configuration. 2. If the CNFG LED is not lit, one of the following conditions may have occurred: v The server did not boot and the DIMM fault LED is lit. a. Check the System Event Log (SEL) for PFA log events. b. Reseat the DIMM. c. If the problem persists, move the DIMM to another slot. 1) If the DIMM LED corresponding to this new DIMM slot on the system board is lit, replace the DIMM. 2) If the DIMM LED corresponding to the original DIMM slot on the system board is lit, replace the system board (trained service personnel only). v The server has booted, the failed DIMM is disabled, and its corresponding LED is lit. a. If LEDs corresponding to both DIMMs are lit, check the System Event Log for PFA information regarding one of the DIMMs, then replace that DIMM. Otherwise, replace both DIMMs simultaneously. b. If only one DIMM's corresponding LED is lit, replace that DIMM. c. Re-enable the DIMM slot in the server firmware settings. |
| NMI | A non-maskable interrupt occurred, or the NMI button was pressed. | View the System Event Log for information about the error. |
| OVER SPEC | The server has been shut down due to power overload on a power channel. Power consumption exceeds the maximum rating. | 1. Check the power LED for error indications (AC and DC power LEDs not lit simultaneously, or the information LED lit). Replace the failed power supply unit. 2. Remove optional devices from the server. |
| PCI | An error occurred on the PCI bus or on the system board. An additional LED next to the failed PCI slot is lit. | 1. Check the LEDs on the PCI slots to identify the component causing the error. 2. View the System Event Log for information about the error. 3. If the adapter causing the failure cannot be determined by using the status indicators and information in the system event log, remove each adapter from the PCI bus where the failure occurred one at a time, and restart the server after removing each adapter. |
| PS | Power supply failure. | 1. Check the power supply status indicators for error indications (the AC power indicator and DC power indicator are not both lit). 2. Ensure that the failed power supply is correctly installed. 3. Replace the failed power supply. |
| RAID | RAID adapter failure | RAID adapter has an error message or RAID adapter has a hardware error |
| SP | Service processor (IMM) failure. | 1. Turn off the server; then reconnect the server to the power source and restart the server. 2. Update the firmware on the IMM. |
| TEMP | System temperature exceeds the threshold level. A failed fan causes the TEMP indicator to light up. | 1. View the error log to determine where the high temperature was detected. If a fan has failed, replace it. 2. Ensure that the room temperature is not too high. Understand the temperature information. 3. Ensure that ventilation openings are not blocked. |
